Why trigger stacking matters

Think of your dog's coping ability like a cup. Each stressor adds water. A dog who met a bicycle, heard a loud bang, and then saw another dog isn't just dealing with the dog — they're dealing with a full cup. That's trigger stacking, and it's why your dog sometimes reacts to something they normally handle fine.

The recovery window

After a big reaction (level 7+), it's often helpful to allow extended calm time before another challenging encounter. Cortisol clears in about an hour, but a dog's coping threshold can stay lowered for hours to days — every dog is different.

When should Sissi walk?

Every encounter is scored on a 0-10 scale and color-coded into three zones. This simple framework turns subjective observations into trackable data.

Green Zone (0-3)

Calm or mild interest. Your dog notices the trigger but can redirect attention. This is the goal.

Yellow Zone (4-6)

Moderate reaction. Body stiffens, pulling on leash, fixating. Still recoverable with management.

Red Zone (7-10)

Intense reaction. Barking, lunging, over-threshold. Dog needs distance immediately and recovery time after.

Knowing the trigger changes the approach

A dog who reacts to cyclists needs different training than one who reacts to other dogs. By tracking triggers separately, you and your behavioralist can prioritize the right desensitization plan for each one.

The science of desensitization

Systematic desensitization works by gradually reducing the distance to a trigger while keeping the dog under threshold. When your average reaction distance decreases over time at the same or lower reaction level, it means the training is working — your dog is building a new, calmer association with that trigger.

How the trend works

  • Half-split comparison: The chart splits your selected range in half and compares the average reaction level of each half.
  • Minimum 3 data points: Each half needs at least 3 weeks of data before a trend is declared. This prevents noise from small samples.
  • ±0.5 threshold: A difference of less than 0.5 between halves is considered stable. Anything beyond is flagged as improving or worsening.

Trigger Stacking

Multiple stressors compound before recovery, lowering the coping threshold for each subsequent trigger.

Behavioral Recovery

After a high-intensity reaction, a dog's coping threshold can remain lowered. Cortisol clears in about an hour; behavioral recovery is individual and may take hours to days.

Systematic Desensitization

Gradually reducing distance to triggers while keeping the dog under threshold builds new, calmer associations over time.
